When I think about the soundtrack of my life, it's a gorgeous mix of jazz, gospel, rock and roll, and the songs my mother taught me to love as a child.
Love this article. I, too, share your deep love of all the artists you mention here. They inspire me and fill me with wonder and love, and I never get tired of hearing their music over and over. You are so fortunate you got to see so many of these folks in person performing live. I have had the chance to see some of them as well, most notably one of Ella Fitzgerald’s last performances at The Hollywood Bowl. She was a little shaky at first, but once she warmed up, she was pretty much the old Ella we all knew. Music is such a wonderful gift from God. I’m grateful we have it. Thanks for sharing this.
Thanks again Rick. You touched all my buttons because Music (mostly classical) has been the Life Blood to my heart’s growth….from early childhood Church, to High School Young Life Camp, to current Congregational Hymns and to the quiet times of meditation…..music, as someone said, is what feelings sound like. I always love reading your ‘so well written’ thoughts……Keep Thinking…..Gordy
Great article this morning! I was thinking how lucky you were to be born here in So Cal where you got exposed to the real thing. In NC we had AM radio on the car radio. I listened late into the night to WLS in Chicago on the crystal radio I built using headphones to listen. When I was a junior in HS I got selected to go to a music clinic at Mars Hill College where we worked with Robert Page in a 200 person chorus and sang Randal Thompson’s “Last Words of David” for the first time. The same night, back in the dorm, we heard “I wanna hold your hand” for the first time. Beginning with experiences like this, I found for me that merely listening was never enough, I needed to participate somehow either by singing, recording, or mixing live sound. These three activities are three equal legs of the stools that hold music up for all of us and created my career. “Thanks for the memories.”
Love it !! I can relate even though I did not grow up in this country listening to the same music that you did.
Tenor voice - you continue to amaze with all your talents. Thanks 😊

Love this, Rick. Thank you!
Lucky you and now us! Thanks!

Rick, thank you for this. The recording of Aretha singing at New Temple Baptist is an experience of heaven I treasure several times a week.
